Why Wei Keong is so careful with money?

You ever notice that Wei Keong never really buy new shirts? Or fancy any new gadgets? Or a new car? As his wife, got to tell you, he is very strict with me about how we spend our money. At one time, I just get so fed up with his attitude especially when shopping. He would ask me, "Do you really need this? Or that?". Actually, the real reason for his behaviour is that there was a time in his life when he had nothing. I really mean nothing. His father walked out of his family when he was 19, right before the Sixth Form exam period. They had nothing. He took the car, the money. And the house was then a big fight between the two parents. His mother had to work to pay the house. It was a whooping 1K installment. And at the time, Wei Keong started working in an audit firm for a very low salary to support himself and to study. He didn't really like accounts, but what choice did he have? He received an offer from UPM to study for a degree but who was going to pay his bill? So the audit firm seemed like a good solution to enable him to study and work at the same time. Life was tough. It was chap-fan every day. Sometimes, he would work late into the nights, and not get any over time claim. Now, whenever he has a chance to save, he will. He always tell me, "Never spend too much money on things that depreciate. Think, before the money gets out of your wallet." Because he knows that rainy days can come anytime. Because he knows that lives can be changed overnight, for better or worse. He fears the latter.
